Together with the Mayor of Selb Wolfgang Kreil, the Bavarian Minister of State Erwin Huber visited various companies in the region on January 10, 2007.

NETZSCH-Gerätebau GmbH was the first company that had the pleasure of hosting the gentlemen on that day. After a warm greeting and a brief introduction into the business world of the NETZSCH Group by Thomas Netzsch, Dr. Thomas Denner presented the ”Analyzing & Testing“ business unit.

Using our analytical instruments, a multiplicity of material properties can be determined as a function of temperature.
There are various methods with which the properties can be measured, for which NETZSCH offers one or more different measurement systems that are utilized in various industries.

By means of two examples, Dr. Denner accorded some insight into the realm of Thermal Analysis.

He clearly demonstrated by experiment that a rubber seal undergoes a change with falling temperature; the property of elasticity alters almost dramatically as temperature falls. While the material is well suited for a seal at room temperature, it would completely fail at very low temperatures.
Rubber seal rings are used, for example, between segments of solid rockets in the air and space travel industry. Here, they serve primarily to seal a gap between two fixed components and to ensure by means of their elasticity that any gaps occurring in areas of slight deformation are always filled.

In Dr. Denner’s second example, he addressed the use of Thermal Analysis for optimizing a brake in a Formula 1 car.
The function of a brake is to transform a car’s kinetic energy into another form of energy and to thereby bring the car to a standstill.
This happens by changing kinetic energy into heat that is released into the environment. Brake systems for Formula 1 cars set particularly high demands, since the high speed causes the energy to be very high, yet the brake needs to be as small and light as possible for the sake of performance efficiency. This places an extreme burden on the material used. It is therefore of great importance to understand the behavior of the materials precisely. In addition, material properties such as thermal conduction and heat capacity can also be determined by our company’s analytical instruments.
Our applications laboratory was currently involved in a research project from this industry.
During the tour by Mr. Walter Neumann through the laboratory area, Dr. Jürgen Blumm, the Head of our Applications Laboratory, showed the guests the high performance brake of a Boeing which had actually been in use and had been sent to our applications lab for further analyses.

Before Mr. Huber took leave of us to visit other companies (Drechsel Textile Finishing GmbH and H.C. Starck Ceramics GmbH & Co. KG), Mr. Walter Neumann again emphasized that the multitude of analytical methods offered by NGB for thermal material characterization lowers exposure to risk since the business is not dependent on any individual industries or regions. Highly specialized teams in the areas of Sales, Customer Service, Applications Support and Applications Laboratories guarantee the sustainability of the business model and safeguard important strategic competitive advantages.

Clear commitment to Selb by our management was not forgotten:
In the near future, even an increase in the production capacity by means of ’Agiler Supply Chain‘ in Selb is planned.
