Highest Precision
A SiO2 glass powder was measured in Pt crucibles under an argon atmosphere at a heating rate of 20 K/min. The extrapolated onset, inflection point and extrapolated end of the glass transition were calculated at 1156°, 1196°C and 1255°C, respectively. The cp values below the glass transition temperature deviate from literature values by less than 1%.

Slag
Slag powder is used, among other things, for continuous steel casting as a mold flow. It is necessary to protect liquid steel against oxidation and from cooling/solidifying too fast. Slags are also used as additives in building materials. The slag examined here was preheated prior to the measurements. The glass transition around 651°C demonstrates the amorphous nature of the material. Above the glass transition a small relaxation peak was seen. Cold crystallization and melting nearly show the same peak area. This additionally indicates a nearly 100% amorphous sample (at room temperature).

Excellent Reproducibility
Four specific heat measurements were carried out on austenitic stainless steel standard reference material SRM 1461. The cp results show only minimal deviations (< 2%). These results demonstrate the excellent reproducibility that can be achieved with the new system.
