Aluminium Alloy

see also: Correction of Indium Melting Peak

Measured are the melting peaks of pure aluminum and an aluminum alloy, using a NETZSCH DTA 404 and an alumina crucible.

Conditions of measurements

Instrument

NETZSCH DSC 404 C PegasusÆ

Heating rate/(K/min)

10

Sample holder

DTA

Crucible

Alumina

The raw DTA curve of aluminum melting peak shows the typical shape:
A nearly linear increasing of the low temperature side and an exponential decrease after the maximum. The melting peak is very broad.
After corrections regarding time constant and thermal resistance the width of this melting peak is dramatically reduced, resulting also in a well defined solid-liquid transition, visible on the sharp increase and very fast transition in the constant value of partial area.

Without any correction, the melting peak of the aluminum alloy (green line) is broad. The melting peaks of eutectics are only small "hills".

After application of the program DSC/DTA Correction, which corrects the measurement regarding time constant and thermal resistance of the device (red line), the melting peaks of eutectics are clearly visible and the melting peak of aluminum is very small, resulting in a well-defined transition edge from the solid to the liquid (blue line of partial area).
