Session 2: Complementary techniques and live demonstration

We are moving from theory to practical experience. Our experts first give a comprehensive overview of the complementary techniques that battery researchers and manufacturers can engage. This is followed by two live demonstrations. Battery experts from Malvern Panalytical and NETZSCH Analyzing & Testing will provide practical tips during this live demo on how to prepare samples, perform measurements and evaluate the results with the respective software solutions.

14:00 – 14:30 – Measuring Accurate Particle Size and Shape of Battery Materials – By Robert Taylor

Particle shape in battery electrode materials holds the key to unlocking any given material’s potential to produce the best-performing battery. Specifically, particle shape affects slurry rheology, as well as the packing density, porosity, and uniformity of electrode coatings. Accordingly, to achieve the highest levels of battery performance, manufacturers must be able to analyze and optimize particle morphology. Our Morphologi 4 optical imaging tool can analyze the size and shape of statistically relevant ensembles of particles in just a few minutes, to empower you with all the critical information you need to optimize your battery slurry.

14:45 – 15:15 – Measuring Low-Shear Flow Behavior and Viscoelastic Properties with NETZSCH Kinexus Rotational Rheometer by Torsten Remmler

One of the strengths of rheological characterization is in mimicking the varied conditions and processes that these material experience in process. Torsten Remmler discusses the contrasting rheological characteristics needed for these different processes and conditions that these slurries must be used under. He shows how simple it is to prepare the Kinexus Rotational Rheometer for the measurement, how to load the samples and how to evaluate the measurement in the dedicated rSpace rheometer software. The careful and delicate balance of contrasting properties will be considered – and hence material measurement needs – for stability, screen printing performance pre, post and during coating. Torsten Remmler goes on to explain how the consideration of viscoelastic properties avoids elastic flow instabilities during the coating process.

15:15 – 15:30 Measuring High-Shear Flow Behavior with NETZSCH Rosand Capillary Rheometer by Torsten Remmler

While the Kinexus Rotational Rheometer is suitable to determine flow properties under low shear to medium shear rate processes, the Rosand Capillary Rheometer is optimized to study of the high-shear flow behavior of battery slurries. The higher deformation conditions are equally as important to now understand how, or even if, the material is able to successful coat for example on the electrode, via typical, higher shear rate process, such as blade coating, slot die coating, spraying and even screen printing.
