The thermal stability of a substance – or in other words, the temperature interval where decomposition of the material occurs – can be crucial not only for processing of pharmaceuticals but also to get an idea about their shelf life or suitable storage conditions.
Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is the method of choice to detect mass changes during a controlled temperature program and to find out at which temperatures they will take place. In combination with a gas analyzing system, such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), it is additionally possible to identify the nature of the evolved gases and thus to elucidate the chemical process behind them. The objective of kinetic evaluation, for example, by using the NETZSCH Kinetics Neo software, is to find an appropriate model, which describes the thermal behavior of the sample under investigation well. Based on this model, predictions can then be made for temperature profiles that are not or difficult to access by measurement.
After a brief introduction to the technique of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with FT-IR, as well as to the kinetic evaluation of thermoanalytical measurements, this webinar aims to illustrate the informative value of the results by means of a number of selected application examples.
