Part 3: Investigating Thermal Stability and Shelf Life of Pharmaceuticals by FT-IR Coupled to Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

The thermal stability of a substance – or in other words, the temperature interval where no volatiles are released and no decomposition of the material occurs – can be crucial not only for the processing of drugs but also to get an idea about their shelf life or suitable storage conditions.

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is the method of choice to detect mass changes and to find out when they will take place. In combination with a gas analyzing system, such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), it is additionally possible to identify the nature of the evolved gases and thus to elucidate the chemical process behind.

This webinar introduces the technique of thermogravimetric analysis (TG) along with the requirements for a successful FT-IR coupling. Moreover, several application examples will be presented to show the informative value of the information received.
