Part 1: Material Composition

The analysis of material composition is twofold: one is the analysis of the chemical composition, which is achieved by FT-IR spectroscopy and can analyze all components including additives and residues. However, to understand the content of each component and their thermal stability, TG is required. The latest advances in TG and TG-FT-IR instrumentation will be presented including examples of plasticizer content in sporting goods and blend composition in household appliances.

Part 2: Failure Analysis

The TG-FTIR combination greatly improves failure analysis because it reveals chemical processes that occur during high-temperature decomposition. In a typical decomposition process, evolved fume is a mixture of gases. Different hardware and software methods to identify the composition of complex gas mixtures will be presented. Examples of applications will include identification of plasticizers and softeners in polymers, decomposition of glycerol, and a case study of failure analysis of PVC cable coatings.
