The properties of sintered products, such as density or particle size distribution, are determined by the sintering conditions (temperature, atmosphere, etc.) and especially by the sintering rates. The NETZSCH Proteus RCS software allows for control of this sintering rate during a dilatometer measurement. In contrast to a conventional dilatometer measurement where the length change of a sample is measured after following a given temperature program – usually under a constant heating rate – RCS determines the required temperature profile for a given rate of change in length. With RCS, the temperature program of the furnace is controlled so as to achieve predefined sintering rates for the sample. Depending on the selected RCS mode, the furnace may no longer be heated at a fixed rate. The heating process may be stopped/started or continuously adapted depending on the sintering rate of the sample. The measured temperature profile can then be used for optimizing the production process.
Alumina Green Body
A test run under RCS conditions on an alumina green body is shown here. The heating rate in the sintering range is reduced by the RCS control so as to achieve a nearly constant shrinkage rate. After the sintering process is finished, the heating rate returns to the programmed value.
